Um, i think it's important to point out that this is not necessarily a negative statement. Many facets of today's political drama are not explicitly covered in Canada's entrenched "Charter of Rights and Freedoms", like the rights of homosexuals which have been 'read into' the Charter on 'analogous' grounds.
What i hear when i read Beverley McLachlin's statement is a women saying that fear mongering and populist politics shouldn't be allowed to erode the rights our constitution (and the American Constitution) is designed to protect... though i can't be certain in what context she made this comment, as neither this nowpublic blurb or the Yahoo! article clarify this point.
