Bonn Vegetable Market

The Marktplatz in the center of Bonn is always very lively during the day. It is full of vegetable carts and people selling their goods. It is also loud, as the vendors try to advertise their special offers using the oldest of all means; their voices.

Note the asparagus - it is white. German asparagus, a real specialty, is thick white, and has to be peeled. It is serverd with raw ham and boiled potatos. During asparagus season, every restaurant has special dishes on offer featuring asparagus. It is a big part of springtime culture.

Rob, what did you use to capture the audio? is almost transporting... certainly adds another dimension to the story; imagine a background soundtrack over a slideshow (coming to NP soon I wonder?? ;-).

Many times while covering a story I have wanted to capture ambient sound - but audio recorded on my cell sounds pretty poor, so I have never uploaded it. Now that NP supports video (or will in the next 24 hours anyway) I was thinking of getting a video camera and trading in the Nikon - not sure I can bring myself to do it though (trade in my camera).

Mike,

I used a Sharp MD-MT 888H(S) mini disc player and a Sony ECM-MS957 stereo microphone. I then loaded onto my laptop, used Audacity and Lame to make the Mp3. Unfortunately I had the recording levels turned up too high and there is lots of clipping. I especially like the stereo effect of the trolley being pulled by at the end.
