NP Rank:
Annual Old Country Church Song Service
Setting back from a rural road in
south central Pennsylvania,
is a small country church building that time seems to have passed by. This old church
building does not have electricity and has gas lights hanging from the ceiling.
The pews and floors are not covered by fabric or carpeting. A stove in the
corner provides heat for the building. This historic religious meetinghouse was
originally known as Bucher's Meetinghouse and later called the Cornwall House.
The idea for this 40-by-60-foot
structure and adjacent cemetery was conceived by the Tulpehocken Church
of the Brethren and local citizens. The meetinghouse was built in 1871 and was
used regularly until 1935. Since then, only special services were held at
Bucher's, with annual music programs conducted in recent years. The
Bucher Meetinghouse is owned and maintained by the Midway Church of the Brethren.
This year's annual song service is to be held on Sunday evening, June
22nd, at 7:00pm. The song service consists of devotions, congregational singing
and special music by a featured music group. This year's music group is the
Roland Zimmerman Family. An outdoor ice cream social is also planned following
the song service, weather permitting. Bucher’s Meetinghouse is located along
Route 419, between Buffalo Springs and Cornwall,
in South Lebanon Township, Lebanon County, PA.
The Roland Zimmerman Family is a 3-piece family band from
eastern Lancaster
County. They perform
bluegrass, country, and folk style gospel music from an Anabaptist perspective.
The Zimmermans performed at the 2007 song service and were enjoyed by all.
