NP Rank:
This is Change
In 1861 black men were slaves and women could not vote. I only mention it because that was the year that Indiana joined the Union andNorth Carolina joined the Confederates.
Now over one hundred years later a new battle is being fought for Indiana and North Carolina, and I find it absolutely remarkable how much our country has changed.
Since the Civil War women have not only gained the right to vote but also there have been 35 female U.S. Senators, 29 women govenors, 12 current CEO’s of fortune 500 companies including Western Union, Ebay, and Pepsi. And on a national average girls now out perform boys in elementary school, middle school, high school, and college.
And considering that this country was still segregated forty yearsago, it is shocking that Barack Obama, a black man, has cleaned up theSouth winning the Mississippi primary, Alabama, Georgia, Virginia, Louisiana, South Carolina, and most likely tonight North Carolina.
So while both canidates might say that they are change only one thing is for certain, they represent how much we have changed.
