Florida: "Habitual Liar" Mother of Missing Tot Stays in Jail

While the Orange County Sheriff's Department works a tip that someone may have seen a child looking like toddler Caylee Marie Anthony get onboard a plane, the girl's mother remains in jail. And, her grandmother continues to attack police for arresting Casey Anthony, and for saying that a family car smelled like "decomposition."  Cindy Anthony scoffed at an investigator, saying that "pizza" left in a car could leave the same smell as decomposition.

The 22-year-old mother of missing toddler Caylee Marie Anthony remains in the Orange County Jail this afternoon.

An Orange Circuit Court judge set Casey Anthony's bond at more than half a million dollars yesterday afternoon, but her family has not been able to come up with the money to bail her out.

The person who posts her bail must pay 10 percent of the bond amount -- $50,000 in cash -- and have collateral to back the remaining balance.

UPDATE: A Florida judge today set Casey Anthony's bond at $500,000 and wearing a GPS monitor on two charges: one felony charge of child neglect in the case of her missing toddler Caylee and a misdemeanor charge for her lies to police. During emotional hearing, a veteran police homicide investigator also said that he'd smelled the "smell of decomposition" in a family car and that police had found hair in the car's trunk.

Anthony's attorney told media that his client would talk to police and help them in their search if they promised her immunity from prosecution. Anthony's family continues to maintain that she is not at fault in the disappearance of the child, who was missing more than a month before the mother replied the grandmother's questions about where Caylee was.

Original story follows.

From Florida, a very unsettling case--a mother who's been called a "habitual liar" and a toddler who hasn't been seen since June 9. No, mom Casey Anthony didn't report her child missing. When questioned, Anthony made up a story about leaving her daughter with  an apparently non-existent baby sitter.

Police earlier dug in the grandparents' back yard after it was reported that Anthony had borrowed a shovel from a neighbor. Nothing was found during that search. Anthony's mother, Cindy Anthony continues to maintain that her daughter is a "good mother." She's charged the Orange County Sheriff's Department with "making a big mistake" in arresting her daughter, who didn't even bother to tell her parents that little Caylee had been gone for more than a month.

Update: I found something that I think is very curious. Both WESH and WFTV  have photos of Caylee, apparently provided by the family. But for some reason, both stations have put the photos into a slideshow format that precludes anyone from saving a picture of the little girl.

That seems counter-intuitive when the search has gone nation-wide. The Orlando Sentinel, which has been closely following this story, also does not present a readily-accessible photo or series of photos.

The photos are all courtesy of the Sun-Sentinel.

If you see this child, please contact the Orange County Sheriff's Office at 407-254-7000, or 407-836-HELP (4357).

Casey Anthony doesn't know where her 2-year-old daughter is, but she wants to get out of jail so she can join the search to help find the missing toddler, her lawyer said Monday.

Anthony, the 22-year-old mother of Caylee Marie Anthony, will ask an Orange County judge at a hearing today to set bail in her case.

Anthony was arrested Wednesday on child-neglect and other charges after Orange County sheriff's detectives accused her of telling a string of lies about her daughter's disappearance. Anthony told investigators she had not seen Caylee since June 9, but no one reported the toddler's disappearance until last week.

good stuff:

PEP, I like this story. It's good stuff.

PEP

Thanks, Cao. The family--other than the mother, arrested for child neglect--are doing the big media circuit.

You're welcome PEP,  it is a well written piece!

Hi Pep, thanks for this story. It seems though there is a babysitter: "Baez said he has requested a sketch artist to depict the babysitter, who may have ties to Miami; Bradenton; Gainesville; Charlotte, N.C.; Brooklyn and New York City."

PEP

Rhonda, that babysitter story seems to go back and forth. Although they've requested that a sketch artist provide a likeness, police earlier said that the woman did not live at the address the mother provided, and that the mother's trail of lies led them to believe that the babysitter didn't exist. Strange, huh? And very sad.

PEP

The Orlando Sentinel has a story on the trail of lies.

The apartment the mother named had been vacant for five months. The police located the babysitter she named, but the woman said she didn't know either the mother or child. Casey Anthony later admitted she didn't know the woman she named.

Hi Pep, I had not read the "trail of lies" link previous to my comment! Thanks!

PEP

You're welcome! Since you're interested, I wanted you to have the information at hand.

Thanks, PEP!

good stuff:

PEP, I like this story. It's good stuff.

Is there something I am missing!? Is she mentally ill!?

PEP

Good question, Paschen. The police say she's a compulsive liar. I'm also not sure about the parents, who seem to be busy complaining about her getting arrested and doing interviews defending her. Meanwhile, a little girl was just casually "missing without comment" for more than a month. That's sick. I don't know if that qualifies as mental illness or not. Bet her lawyer will go for that.

Thanks for the read, comment, and flag!
