Will Activists Rage Against Machine in Denver?

According to one of this blog’s trusted contacts in the Mile High City, unnamed Denver city officials are concerned that RECREATE ‘68 activists might rage against the Democratic Party machine in conjunction with a concert by the volatile rap group, Rage Against the Machine, tonight.

Of course, the fact that those activists arrived this morning to find Civic Center Park — the whole park — fenced off has something to do with the prediction.

So why was the entire park fenced off?

The official explanation, my source tells me, is that the fence was erected in advance of a Taste of Colorado event which begins Friday and runs through the holiday weekend.  RECREATE ‘68 organizers say, regardless of the reason why it was erected, that the fence violates their group’s permit to rally at the park today.

Whether or not the combination of a fence and a Rage Against The Machine performance prompts activists to let loose and riot remains to be seen.  It’s possible, however, that there will be more Democratic National Convention fireworks outside the Pepsi Center than inside.

Come on, do you really expect that people are going to "riot" because Zack de la Rocha & co will be playing a little loud music? And do you really consider RATM a "volatile rap group"? Have you heard their music?

Might they not be, as Billboard stated all the way back in 1992, "one of the most original and virtuosic new rock bands in the nation..."? Just offering a bit of perspective.
