Still Waiting for Hurricane Norbert

by Actual News Geezer | October 11, 2008 at 10:48 am | 319 views | 17 comments | 40 recommendations

OK, 6pm and no Norbert - looks like we may have dodged a bullet. Fred on sailing vessel Sojourn did a 5pm briefing, and says the worst is already passed.

Worst? what do I do with the 500 t-shirts I ordered...."I SURVIVED NORBERT" ?

Any ideas?

It's now 1430 local time and the storm is predicted to make landfall in another 3 hours.  Suddenly the air has turned thick - humidity is running about 99 percent and the air temperature is 93 F.

I just got a loaf of warm bread delivered by Doug aboard Ke-Em-Te, courtesy of Trish. Terry and Terry are wandering around the marina, checking everybody's lines and tying up loose things.

It’s 11:30 am Guaymas, Mexico time and we still have about 7 hours before Norbert makes landfall. I am writing this aboard my 40 ft. cutter, SolMate. Currently I am tied up at the dock in Marina San Carlos.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has had a fairly consistent story for the last 12 hours - Norbert has strengthened somewhat and will be (probably) a category 1 cyclone when it gets here.

Everybody who is here has been lashing down anything that might become an unguided missile when the expected 50 - 75 knot winds arrive. That includes tying down stuff on boats where the owners are not here.

Most of us have never been through a hurricane and we are fortunate in that Marina San Carlos is probably one of the best-protected harbour in the Sea of Cortez. But there are lots of unknowns - such as whether there will be a storm surge (a 3 - 6 ft. surge is predicted by the NHC, and it will arrive right at high tide!).

Here is the projected path:

Nice one, geez. Have you found somewhere save (and attached to the ground) to stay?

You may no longer be in the news-finding business, but it looks like news can still find you!

Norbert has made contact with the coast:

Hurricane Norbert struck Mexico's northwest Pacific coast Saturday, ripping off roofs, knocking down trees and leaving more than 20,000 homes without electricity, local authorities said.

Norbert, a Category Two hurricane on the five-level Saffir-Simpson scale, made landfall at Puerto Cortes, on the Baja California peninsula around 1630 GMT, Mexico's National Weather Service said.

Early assessments showed only material damage.

Hey Pat,  I am about 75 miles northwest of the hurricane landfall. It's now about 6pm local time and we are just getting light winds so far. We may just dodge this bullet!  Thanks for your concern and to all the other commentors, many thanks!

These are my hurricane preps  list!

I'll take a t-shirt... :)

Actual News Geezer

What size would you like?  how many? which colors? v-neck or crew? cotton or poly-cotton blend?  would you like a NORBERT baseball cap in matching colors? also the deal came with stadium seat pads with NORBERT in the center...these should be, or rather, should have been, terrific sellers.

How could anyone resist a stadium seat pad with NORBERT in the centre!? Hurricane or no hurricane!

They can also be adapted to other (admittedly less-useful) slogans, like I'm SURVIVED by NORBERT.

I am more like thinking that we'll find a washed-up domestic terrorist by the name of Norbert, who once panhandled from Barack Obama and John McCain...a kind of modern times Typhoid Mary.  Then my Norbert t-shirts might make a comeback...
