I think we all agree that what we're working at is a good thing. Having individuals from all over the world report on the news that they find interesting has proven to be a great success. But there's something missing.

Why don't we open up some of the code for the website to outside developers so they can come up with new ideas that can be tested by interested NowPublic members? Wouldn't it be cool if someone developed a widget that allowed you to see where the people are who have read your story? Wouldn't it help out a lot if someone developed a grammar checker for our stories?

Our staff has done and continues to do a great job with this site. The improvements have been tremendous. But it doesn't hurt to allow some fresh blood into the development process.

Isn't opening up the process what this site is all about anyways?

This isn't my area of expertise so I can't answer all your questions. However, I can tell you that NowPublic is a drupal based system and as such all the features we develop we donate back to the drupal community. So all the code is accessible from that perspective.

The Firefox spell checker does work within the Story Creation and Story Edit pages - you just have to disable html.  I think an effective grammar checker is yet to be developed.

I hope one of the Developers chimes in here with a little more insight than I, a humble content guy.

i'd love to publish an api
for nowpublic - it's something we've talked about internally for a long time. to
do it effectively though we'd need to dedicate some resources to documenting
it, answering questions, etc. it’s not in the plans for 2007, but I’d be surprised
if we didn’t release at least some basic capabilities in q1 08.

fyi, we have a lot of initiatives
we are working on… our product development, business development (partnership),
and technology roadmaps for 2008 are very aggressive. I don’t wan to let the
cat out of the bag just yet with specific projects details, but expect that
pace of development to more then double in 2008.

if you know of any talented
php coders that might be interested in coming to work for us full time, let me
know (devjobs@nowpublic.com). we currently have openings for several front end
and back end development positions. once we have the team built out more, we
will be better positioned to publish and support an api.

Thanks for the update, sounds very exciting. If I come across any of those coders I'll tell you right away.
