India Backs Iran's Nuclear Program

ABU DHABI: India on Monday backed Iran's "peaceful" nuclear programme and said New Delhi would continue its "significant" engagement with Tehran since the oil-rich nation is an important-role player in the Middle East.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who is on a three-day visit to UAE, said India fully supports Iran's attempt to develop "its knowledge-base pertaining to the harnessing of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes."

"However, it has to be, in accordance with its own international commitments and obligations, satisfy the international community that its programme is indeed peaceful," Mukherjee said, speaking on "India's Foreign Policy and India-Gulf relations - Meeting and Challenges of the 21st century".

He said India believed that the most effective platform to address the nuclear issue is the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Thanks for this, moonwolf. "Peaceful" nuclear programs seem inherently...er...unstable, do they not?

moonwolf

Of course they are.  Any nuclear program is inherently unstable, and any group of human beings holding nuclear weapons or even producing nuclear materials is dangerous.  Canada supplies uranium to the USA which ends up as nuclear warheads and DU munitions which kill and poison people in several countries.  Is that a factor one could suggest causes 'instability'?  Sorry, rhetorical question again!

One wonders why we would trust the USA and Israel to have nuclear weapons!  They are the "good guys'??  Take a look at those loonies and ask yourself why you trust them?  History has clearly shown this trust to be misplaced, because they do have the power and the USA has proved its willingness to use weapons of mass destruction and thus we have the situation we do today where those two countries use force globally with impunity.  You will notice that no country that even appears to have nuclear weapons capability has ever been attacked. No military action has been taken against North Korea lately has it?

Having only one group on one side of an intense ideological/religious/political divide with nuclear weapons capability virtually insures it will be used at some point.  So for me, I believe Iran must obtain nuclear weapons to force stability on the region.  Mutually Assured Destruction worked before and is the only way that fighting will stop between countries in the region.  The whole idea that Iran would commit suicide by attacking Israel if it had nuclear weapons is poppycock!  If Iran did have nuclear weapons we would first have MAD and then maybe even détente over time.  It would also mean the USA would get it's ugly ass out of the region and leave those poor people alone.

The USA doesn't have the guts for a real fair fight, and never has.  They will only fight when they have overwhelming superiority.  If Iran had nuclear warheads both the crazy Israeli's and the whacko USA would have to stand down.  The only country in the mix that has not attacked anyone is, after all, Iran.  That they live in a way we don't agree with and have a society that seems to be "less free' than ours is none of our business.  That they have most of the easy oil is true, but it is theirs and if we want it we should buy it not steal it!

good stuff:

moonwolf, I like this story. It's good stuff.

To bad India and Iran don't go the Geothermal route. It is clear they support Nuclear for weapons, when they disavow Geothermal Development.  Iran is going the wrong way in concern to energy production, along with India. If Israel gave up its nuclear arsenal, I think the idea of Nuclear threats would diminish in the Middle East.  America needs to lead the way toward nuclear reduction and elimination. America has caused this problem, no one else.

Hope you take a look at my idea moonwolf...

I agree with you djermano.  That we rush into more nuclear reactors is more about vested interest and big business than about sanity or reality.  Nuclear power is dangerous and will continue to be so no matter what steps are taken to minimize the risks. Ultimately the elephant in the room is still there.  How exactly do we dispose of nuclear waste, and old nuclear equipment and reactors?  Thousands of years in the future when all humans are gone our only legacy may well be a radioactive soup covering the surface of earth.

There are so many other ways to generate power that are safe and would stimulate an explosion of creativity, new technologies and new materials, but Al Gore and his nuclear industry buddies want to get richer and richer, so nuclear it is!

That America would have led the way as you suggest would have been great, but unfortunately the USA has demonstrated its total lack of moral authority and inability to do anything other than pursue profits whatever the cost to others.

You will notice Moonwolf that in the MiddleEast the countries that have all the Oil and most of the worlds resources in Oil have no protection or nuclear deterrance.  Superpowers who do have the military but no Oil to keep their engine primed, have come in to lay claim to Middle Eastern Oil. Clearly Iran see's this. Clearly other Superpowers who have nuclear power are encouraging Iran to become Nuclear to have a friendship in assuring Oil comes to their country, before it goes to the USA....axis of evil declarer GW Bush people. Notice how India embraces Iran, because India knows the USA has no Oil resources. No wonder binLadin wanted the US military to leave Saudi Arabia, because he wanted Saudi Arabia to protect itself, instead of being hooked into dependence on US military protection.

The US usually has always stressed independence of people in doing their own and taking care of their own, but in concern to the military it is like military welfare services to the world. I say if the US got out of the Middle East and stopped supporting Israel all these problems would fade away. The governments would do the best for the people. If the US gave the Middle East a reason to not have nuclear weapons such as its own dismantling, I believe Iran would not continue its program.

The only thing the USA is able to sell to the world is its military protection racket, and that type of politicking is extortion to the highest degree; as the Mafia did to businesses in Chicago and New York City.

good stuff:

moonwolf,  IAEA Article III,  states: "IAEA is mandated to encourage and assist research on, and development and practical application of atomic energy for peaceful uses throughout the world." Read more here: http://www.iaea.org/About/statute_text.html#A1.3

It seems then that Iran has every right to develop its nuclear technology knowledge base for peaceful purposes unless the IAEA can prove that Iran is developing its program for other than peaceful purposes.  The outcome will be interesting! Thanks for posting this story.

moonwolf

Yes Iran does have the right Rhonda and the demand by Israel, a militaristic, pugilistic, 'secretly' nuclear armed state and the USA, the only country to use nuclear weapons on large populations in war telling Iran it cannot develop peaceful nuclear power is the height of hypocrisy!

That we support Tel Aviv and Washington in this pogrom is truly sad and stupid.
