Update 6th September 2007 Luciano died this morning aged 71.

Luciano Pavarotti The worlds greatest tenor, has been struggling with illness for many months now, but continued to work.

Luciano, the most celebrated opera singer in modern times, is fighting for his life after his kidney reportedly collapsed.

Opera star Luciano Pavarotti is said to be in a "very serious condition"

Pavarotti, 71, has been battling pancreatic cancer, and surgeons operated to remove a tumour in July last year.

His most recent spell in hospital came halfway through August, when he was rushed to the Policlinico hospital in Modena with a fever caused by a chest infection.

He was released at the end of the month and his manager insisted he would shortly release his new album of choral pieces.

Pavarotti recently phoned a concert on the island of Ischia to reassure the crowd he was in good health.

He said he was looking forward to teaching his students again.

Tonight the singer remains in his holiday home outside Pesaro, despite the seriousness of his condition.

Sources close to his family said he had fallen unconscious.

Alberto Greccho, a spokesman for the Policlinico hospital, said it was not aware of Pavarotti's condition, as he was not being treated there.

I had a chance to see Pavarotti in person at the Vienna Opera House in 1997.  He was fantastic.  Its a sad day for fans of music and more so fans of Opera.

gryphon, thank you, the Vienna: State Opera House is a most beautiful venue, I was in Vienna in 1974 for the recording of Puccini: "Madame Butterfly" (1974) with Luciano Pavarotti, Mirella Freni, Herbert von Karajan conducting recorded at the Vienna: Sofiensaal and spent an enjoyable evening off at the  Vienna Philharmonic Ball, we had wonderful Food and a great time.
Luciano will be sadly missed by classical music lovers and his close friends, family and colleagues. He had a great life and accomplished so much and recorded so many different operas that his music will go on for eternity.
