NP Rank:
When did it all go so wrong in the Bush Presidency?

I am sure that we all find ourselves asking each other the same question, at least I know that it has been the subject of several conversations lately; when did we as a country take such a strong turn for the negative or is it too complex of a question to think that there is a single answer? I would love to hear your answers and I will take a stab at mine.
On September 11th, 2001 the United States of America was outraged and saddened at the horrific acts of terrorism that took place in PA, NY and DC. That shock and horror turned to solidarity as the country struggled to find meaning and direction following this unprecedented civilian attack. The majority of the world was equally as outraged and citizens around the world took to calling themselves American as an expression of the connection they felt with their brothers and sisters in the United States of America.
In the weeks that followed our President made the following statement to the world at a speech at the United Nations in November, 2001:
"You are either with us or against us"
How can we expect a partner to have a conversation with us if we have already provided context that states that disagreement will not be tolerated?
What about simply "Who will help us in this battle against democracy?" or "We need your help in this as we know that we can not do this alone?" even "Who doesn't want this to happen to them?"
Playing Armchair Quarterback or second-guessing has become a sport in this country and I don't envy the position of the President to be put in this situation. With that being said, this subject is what I find myself gravitating to when someone asks me where it all went wrong. What do you think?
