This is a nice Valentine's Day story coming out of San Francisco. The city knows people from all over the world love the celebrity parrots which make their home on Telegraph Hill. So, they decided to make sure the cypress trees being used as their perch will continued to be maintained over the years, allowing people and birds alike to share in the urban love fest...

Update: Here is a great link to the SF Parrot pool on Flickr...

"The city has really worked to address all the issues," said Dufty, giving credit to City Attorney Dennis Herrera's office and Cowen for the legislation set to get a City Hall hearing March 1.

"Mr. Cowen is protected, which I think is appropriate. We heard loud and clear from around the world that this is a special habitat. It's an example to other cities that they can work creatively to protect their animal wonders."

According to the measure, the "wild parrots have become a valued aspect of the identity and culture of the Telegraph Hill neighborhood, bringing curiosity and joy to both residents and visitors to San Francisco." The supervisor also credits them with helping to "expand the public's interest in urban wildlife and to engage local residents in preserving the urban forest."
