Climate change campaigner Al Gore and the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have been jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The committee cited "their efforts to build up and disseminate knowledge about man-made climate change".
Mr Gore, 59, said he was "deeply honoured" while IPCC chairman Rajendra Pachauri said he was "overwhelmed".
Mr Gore was behind a blockbuster film on climate change while the IPCC is the top authority on global warming.
Announcing the award, the Norwegian Nobel Committee praised the recipients' efforts to "lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract [climate] change".

Of course I am not sure how climate change and a Powerpoint slide show qualify for a "peace" prize, but I suppose there is not other category.

Al Gore deserves the prize for his promotion of the environment. Just one criticism is his continual promotion of himself which often lets him down. His book 'An inconvenient truth' contains some excellent truth, but is spoilt with to much personal stuff which is of no interest to anyone but himself.

So Liam put it, his Inconvienient truth had some excellent truth, but for many academics who actually study the environment, there were many inconsistencies about his speech about the environment which have been proven blatently false. Did Gore know this in advance? No one can say. I think a Nobel prize is a tad over the top for someone who was only a popular mouthpiece, who in all likelyhood really didnt understand what he was saying using a preprepared speech written by others. I say this, because if they were his own words he would have known he was spreading lies. Hence some fear mongering groups pretty much wrote everything for him.
Does this classify as Nobel material? Especially if you are pretty much just an actor ex president reading someone elses work? I think not! I think most would agree if the original authour of this material tried to pass these lies without Gores help, he would get the story past the first Producers Read through.

I wrote a blog post about the discrepancy between Gore's efforts and the scientific errors in the inconvenient truth documentary.

This is better than awarding Nobel Prizes for developing "Gay Bombs". Good stuff.

If this propels Gore into running for president, 2008 is going to be one of the most fascinating election campaigns in modern history.

Call me a contrarian, but the thing I don't get is what does speaking up about climate change (whether or not you believe in it -- I do) have to do with world peace, per se? The Nobel Committee's rationale is here -- basically, global warming could spur conflicts between civilizations over increasingly scarce resources -- but it's kind of a stretch.

This is a political award just like the terrorist Arafat and worst president ever Jimmy Carter won.It has lost it's meaning.

I agree. Arafat, Carter, Gore....certainly not Aung San Suu Kyi, Lech Wałęsa, or Nelson Mandela

urbano411, . Good stuff. It is a shame politics has overlooked so many in the world truly fighting for peace. There are many in Dafur who risk thier lives everyday for peace. And there are many who have died in the quest for peace.

urbano411,for Al Gore for promoting the environment. Good stuff.

Sorry to rain on the parade, but Al Gore is just another politician. Climate change may be true, but in BC, he and our provincial premier chummed around giving each other kudos, while clearcutting of old growth forest inside a watershed area (Chapman Creek, Sunshine Coast) happened recently, thanks to our premier's "green initiative". It may have been better to have let the IPCC have all the glory, than to have to share it with Gore. For more on Al Gore and the Premier and the forest clearcut, please view this video, before giving "high fives" to Al Gore.

Thanks for the video link. Its a great shame when politicians don't practice what they preach and worse still when they lie.

You know, I am not one to "Pee in anyones Cornflakes" as Global
warming is an issue, what I took exception as I apparently have a
degree in Environmental Studies is the movie in which Gore reading from
prepared scripts written by others (Biased) had many untruths in it,
anyone who watches the film, can easily find out these untruths for
themselves on the internet, and now that we are on the subject of
Global Warming, here are another group of scientists who formed a
documentary featured on British televison on BBC and in the US. Nothing
like balanced reporting I always say.
Hit the link and watch with interest, or perhaps read the story online.
