Remember Google Mail's promise of endless storage? Forget it.

Tod Maffin is a smart guy and when he reports on something largely ignored elsewhere I pay attention.

Today he reveals how Google is welching (sorry Welshmen everywhere) on its implicit promise to store your email "forever." It seems that Maffin ran out of his allocated 3gb of space and now has to clear out his treasured digital heirlooms.

I’ve been a huge fan of Google’s free online email service, Gmail, since it launched. Nearly 3 GB of storage (!) and quick searching made it seem like a dream when the company launched it on April Fools Day three years ago.

Back then, Wayne Rosing, VP of engineering at Google breathlessly told the media “”The idea is that your mail can stay in there forever… You can always index it, always search it, and always find things from the past.

That is, until tonight.

Tonight, I ran out of space. Yes, Virginia, eventually, even with 3 GB, you’ll run out of space. And now I’m stuck. I’m not the only one.

good stuff:

Eek! This made me run to my Gmail to investigate...I'm 30% full. Not great...that means I technically have some years left (I think I've been on Gmail for a few years at this point) but that's still a bit disconcerting. I wonder what they're going to do?

"Eek!"  That is a mouse word, I hope you know, as in "Eek! A mouse word just came out of my mouth!"  "Yikes" is perhaps less likely to create confusion.

I've always been a fan of "yowsa!"

How did this story turn into a Tod Maffin slideshow???  did you see all the fotos???

Wow. That was fast.

Just hours after I posted about how I’d gladly pay $20 a year for
more storage space in Gmail, Google actually announces such a thing.

I wish I could claim that Google follows my blog closely and they
put 400 engineers on the case this morning to launch it, butthe timing
of my post was just a happy coincidence.

Now, if you want to upgrade, just go here. Takes about a day to kick in.

Beautiful.

Allan Sorensen

Did Google promise "endless storage"?

 or to store 3Gig "endlessly"?

You guys should learn how to use your computers, and to read English
