Housing is a human right, like food. They are essential to our survival. Under capitalism they are not a right but just commodities to be traded for profit. When the market goes crazy and decides that housing is an investment, rather than an essential human need, then the state needs to step in and control the market. And it can begin with rent controls and expand to other curbs on the speculative market.

It's extremely discouraging to see such massive growth in homelessness here, at the same time there are so many houses sitting empty because they are being used as investments rather than homes.
In Calgary, people can collaborate on efforts for change around housing issues with CHAI - the Calgary Housing Action Initiative.
