Ribblehead Viaduct open to walkers

Dent - Cumbria England.Hundreds of people took advantage of the first opportunity to explore the  Ribblehead Viaduct by foot while the Settle-Carlisle railway line, which runs along it, was closed for repairs. The experience was not for the fainthearted, given that the viaduct is 32 metres (104ft) high. But if any walkers felt the onset of vertigo, they need only spare a thought for the hundreds of navvies who lost their lives building the line during the 1870s, when the death toll was so great that the railway paid for an expansion of the local graveyard. Many workers died from accidents and smallpox.
