Wisconsin priest removes church organist over her sale of sex toys

NEW FRANKEN, Wis. (AP) - A Catholic priest has removed his church's organist and choir director from her duties saying her sale of sex toys was not "consistent with Church teachings."

Linette Servais, 50, played the organ and sung with the choir for 35 years. Much of her work as choir director and organist was done without pay. When her parish priest asked to meet with her, she thought it was to say thank you.

Instead, she was told to quit her sales job with company known as Pure Romance or she would lose her position in the church.

Pure Romance in Loveland, Ohio, is a $60 million per year business that sells spa products and sex toys at homes parties attended by women. It has 15,000 consultants like Servais.

She said her decision was not hard: She began working with Pure Romance after a brain tumor and treatment left her sexually dysfunctional. The job allows her to help other women who have similar problems.

A Difference of Opinion

Servais said she feels called as a Christian to help women, especially those who have sexual problems resulting from cancer. She does not see this work as incompatible with her faith as a Catholic.

Father Dean Dombroski thinks otherwise.

He sent a letter last fall to all members of his congregation.

"Linette is a consultant for a firm which sells products of a sexual nature that are not consistent with Church teachings," he wrote. "Because parish leaders are expected to model the teaching of our faith, once this matter became public she and I met and she was given a choice. Either she could stay on as the choir director/organist or she could continue to be a consultant but she could not do both."

Tell her to go play organ over at the Episcopal Church, she would find a home over there ... and she wouldn't have to fuss with all of that Latin.

good stuff:

Whatever one's religious views, we simply would not be here without sex. It strikes me as odd that one's profession seems to have such a bearing here.

I just find it odd that her profession is not "Catholic-Friendly" but other professions, say "Tank Commander" or "Bomber Pilot" are in good standing with Holy Mother Church (and often from both sides of the conflict).... things that make you say hmmmmmmmmmm.

You know Howard, you do sound like "that". I suppose  Gandi had it right when he said that it wasn't Christ he disliked, he liked Christ very much. It was Christians he didn't like, because they were so unlike Christ.  But since you seem to be without sin, continue to cast stones becasue her occupation makes you uncomfortable.

Don't you have a Lion and Lamb Ministry article to be marking as "good stuff" somewhere?

"There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch."

A tolerant person wouldn't care what her job was...

Linette should just get over this, she is making a mountain out of a mole hill... It was her choice to continue selling the products instead of staying with the church.. She also needs to stop bringing other people she claims she may of helped by selling this crap.. Does she not realize maybe they don't want it public???  And since this happened over 6 months ago, why is this a big deal now??? Lets see the obvious $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.. If it was so hurtful then it should of been dealt with earlier... She just needs to pack up and move on... Many people sell sexual items but are smart and don't bring it to church picnics even if it is just lotions... Sell that stuff on the side... And beware that people may look down on you....

I wonder if all products sold in sex shops are prohibited be the Church? Some of them are really innocent. Who knows what kind of sex toys or maybe sensual love product Linette ordered in Pure Romance?
