Fan dies, 100 injured in Spain's Euro celebrations

July 1 | - The aftermath of city-wide Euro victory celebrations in Madrid was tragic and messy.
Spain’s Euro 2008 football victory party turned sour when one fan died and nearly 100 suffered injuries amid wild celebrations in Madrid.The victim, a 40-year-old man, was found lying in a pool of blood by street cleaners at dawn yesterday in the centre of the capital. There was no indication of foul play and police said that the fan, wearing the red shirt of the Spanish team, probably suffered a head wound after falling over in the crowd while inebriated.
More than 50 supporters were arrested for acts of vandalism and public disorder, police said. Most trouble occurred around Plaza Colón, where 65,000 fans watched the match on giant screens.

Euro 2008 champions Spain have arrived home from Austria and paraded the Henri Delaunay trophy through Madrid in front of their euphoric fans.They touched down at Madrid Barajas airport around 1840 BST in a plane with "Campeones" (champions) written on it.
They then took an open-top bus to meet joyous fans in a packed Colon Square.
Earlier in the day| - Fresh from yesterday's plucky win over Germany, Spain's soccer squad will arrive in Madrid this afternoon for a massive victory parade.
Spain's triumphant Euro 2008 squad are expected to receive a euphoric welcome when they arrive home on Monday.They are due at Madrid Barajas airport at about 1700 BST, before heading to Colon Square to show off the trophy.
Sunday's 1-0 victory over Germany was Spain's first major tournament win in 44 years and captain Iker Casillas lavished praise on coach Luis Aragones.
"Aragones has done a great job," he said. "He made us believe that it could be done from day one."
Thousands of fans celebrated their country's victory and are expected to line the streets as the players return to parade the Henri Delaunay trophy and Casillas added: "We have done a great job together as a team.
In Madrid hundreds of police struggled to keep traffic moving as fans spilled out of the city’s main square into restaurants and bars for a night of partying.
Police made 52 arrests, and one 40-year-old Spanish fan was found dead in the morning - it is assumed he fell and bashed his head while drunk, the AFP news agency reported.

julianw, I like this story. It's good stuff. I would have added the part about flight attendants dancing Macarena in front of the Spanish soccer squad, while giving the oxygen mask and emergency exit instructions. I will try finding the footage.
