Winnipeg Goldeyes Catcher Fractures Skull During Away Game

Winnipeg Goldeyes catcher, Dustin Richardson, was taken away by stretcher last night during a game against the Joliet JackHammers in Joliet, IL. Richardson was struck in the head by the backswing of a bat held by JackHammers slugger Juan Diaz. The hit caused Richardson to lose consciousness, but he later regained it before being taken off the field.

Richardson suffered a fractured skull and was expected to be in hospital overnight for observation.

Chris D dot ca spoke to Russell Wahrman, Dustin’s uncle, who tells us that Richardson’s mother and grandmother both flew out to Joliet, IL this morning.

According to Russell Wahrman, doctors ran MRI scans and other tests today. Richardson is also suffering from a sore neck and shoulder and at the recommendation of physicians, will not be able to travel or play ball for at least a month. There is also no need for any surgery at this point.

It appears Dustin Richardson will be done for the entire season with
the Goldeyes, according to CFRW’s pre-game show. Goldeyes coach, Tom
Vaeth, also tells CFRW, “It was a very small, clean fracture but there
was no slowing or bleeding on the brain.”

We also spoke to Russell Wahrman again this morning, who says that
Dustin’s neck and shoulder pain might be whiplash from turning the head
during the reaction of the hit. The hospital says they may release him
today, but he’ll have to stay in town for a week, if not longer.
According to Wahrman, Dustin appears to be in good spirits as he chats
with family members at his bedside.
