A muslim man in Malaysia, will have to wait till this Sunday, June 18, 2008 for the court to decide if he is allowed to take a fourth wife.

Mohamed Nor, 51, a casual worker from the state of Trengganu in north east Peninsula Malaysia, had sought the muslim Syariah High Court for permission to marry a woman 16 years younger than him. Presently he is already married to three wives who are living under one roof with him.

All these three wives have consented to allowing him to take on the additional wife.

According to muslim laws, a muslim man is allowed to have up to four wives at any one time. However, it is common practice, for most muslim men in Malaysia to have only one wife. For non muslims, who do not come under the Syariah (muslim) laws but under the common civil law, they are not permitted to have more than one wife at any one time. Bigamy for these non muslims is illegal in Malaysia.
