I guess there's room for both. Amateur photographers are needed in this day and age of instantaneous news reporting, especially for certain events such as natural disasters and unplanned occurances.
On the other hand for news reports that are in-depth, analytical, and investigative there is no doubt professionals are needed because they are bound by standards ethics. This ensures fair and concise journalism.
