NP Rank:
LINUX expanding through magazine distributions- reverse acronyme's are endpoints of human language
recently LINUX has expanded rapidly: magazine distributions, low-end PCs like the OLPC and the EEE, and also in the embedded sector (internet radio, java based mobile phones use at least the GPL license).
there are
-few games at all
-few demos
-few specific music productions
-only C++ (GCC)
because of that i do not feel good using it. wait! this is not true!
i have experienced a much better system in the late 1980s, and 1990s. it is called AMIGA OS. i do not understand why i should step back and learn the complicated LINUX, PHP, JAVA, RUBY, PERL, LAMP, MYSQL stuff.
i could if i really wanted to (let undiscussed this also could be done with WINDOWS). but i think it is clear now that LINUX is not a consumer OS. it is, at best, a UNIX derivate suitable to host some websites, including databases (let undiscussed many private people do not need a database for their website).
it is a fact LINUX systems are offering filehosting for 500 mbyte, for free. people can upload files to "somewhere" on the net!
-it is not clear who pays the bills
-often the one who maintains your files is not you. they may disappear after a while, or for no visible reason
who really needs this large gratis storage?
for instance, using WINDOWS webhosting, i pay $3 for 400MB/month, using a low-end plan. would it be inpolite to call the free filehosting "price dumping"? maybe, maybe not. just, if i use commercial webspace (WINDOWS), i maintain much more control, and freedom. it is also more comfortable than LINUX.
just, because i have experienced AMIGA OS, i am rather upset with LINUX. OK everything was commercial. but people did not bother to use copied game software. formally it was not allowed, but it was widely practiced.
you should take a look the existing archieves of games, software, and demos for the AMIGA. because attempts to blend LINUX and AMIGA OS already turned out to be unlucky, it won't be too much a point to model all new LINUX after the old AMIGA OS. in the best case, you would end of with a clone of AMIGA OS!
so i do not understand why LINUX is trying to sneak into the embedded sector (where it is wasting a lot of resources, needs 100s of kbytes just to startup), and in the consumer sector (WINDOWS was designed to be a consumeable product, including short product life).
they should go commercial as well, and offer webhosting, and filehosting at normal prices, and stop the price dumping. if you want to give a gift to people, then you should write where it comes from (for instance, rich people from Arabian countries).
why go to university, attend special LINUX bootcamps, and read 10000s of pages just to get started with LINUX, and GCC? when you can learn AMIGA OS, AMIGA BASIC, even C in just one evening (if someone is willing to explain it to you). i have learned "C" on the AMIGA (not C++). and i think AMIGA OS should be used more- even nowadays. it is, even if not a spotless system, very compact, useable, and can be used as alternative in the private life!
-no internet by default
-floppy disk images (also can read WINDOWS directories if you allow it)
-no advertising will ever pop up
-no unattended updates will ever take place
OK i admit, without introduction, you would have difficulties to use AMIGA OS! for this reason, i will try to mount a starting point how to get along with AMIGA OS. i have also added two games from the early 1990s, which you could use. however, there are additional files needed to get along, for instance, AMIGA OS is not freeware. it is still offered commercially, and it is copyrighted. the emulator is freely available for WINDOWS. the LINUX version has been abandoned, a few years ago, it was also available for LINUX. but there are just too many thing LINUX can not do, and there are different LINUX distro's as well. AMIGA lives from graphics and sound, because it was a television game console, and for this reason. can not really work just from the command line. however, you could use it as WINDOS shell if you really wanted to...
have a look here: http://groups.msn.com/68k
there you can also find links. i write this article for fun, and because i think AMIGA OS is better than LINUX, not to make you buy the AMIGA OS.
i have once played a civilization clone on LINUX, and it was not really the same thing. traditionally, game software is always developed commercially, and sold in shops for money. recently prices have gone down to about $15 for one budget title. if you can not live with that, you should indeed use LINUX (but why should people be left without any money?)
and it is OK if people can see if a webservice is LINUX powered or WINDOWS powered (tough some people would prefer WINDOWS). personally, i look at LINUX programmers like...strange cancer-like creatures from a different planet. i wonder how they do their job- maybe there are many tiny bulbs inside, an aquarium, tiny ferris wheels, and arrays of springs? OK i know better- i could even look into my PHP books. just, i read about camels, and suggestions to stay quiet online, and suggestions not to "reinvent the wheel". i mean, i have this PHP LINGO printed black on white.
to me, PHP just looks like an overly complicated scripting implementation of C++, mixed into HTML, but HTML was not initially designed to do this job. of course it works- but how, and at what for a price. you need to go to university, to study 10000s of pages, and to become a hack guru- just to have a tiny online database, and webspace.
on the AMIGA, people have never been quested to go to bootcamps (at least, it was called meeting), or to become specialized experts to such a degree.
and if LINUX becomes mainstream, there would be viruse's as well, or alternatively, schemes to trick youngsters into special events, free flights, maybe an omineous "yahoo lottery"- not forget the already existing file sharing communities (P2P), not to be named, but at times, very sounding names, and last not least, "WIKI"- a thing frowned upon by some people as concept as such.
neither AMIGA OS is dead (at least, i am using it), nor LINUX will disappear completely in the near future. the difference is that AMIGA OS agreed to use a virtual system offered by WINDOWS- this might even become a path for LINUX. when will someone create a LINUX emulator for WINDOWS?
"specialization leads to death" (ghost in the shell, japanese anime movie)
what are reverse acronyme's, else than specialized endpoints of human language. look at the AMIGA. they tried terms like REXX (a scripting language), and BOOPSI (object orientated GUI). who mentions these terms nowadays?
think someone says to R. Stallman: "Hey you guy, you are an endpoint".
just wrote this article, that you can see, i do not just declare opensource, wiki&co as nogood coming from nowhere, but with good reasons. why step back from a freedom once enjoyed (and rely on someone rich throwing in candy from an invisible off-point). if i use commercial filespace (in form of WINDOWS webhosting), i have at least paid for something, and can feel as a consumer. consumers have rights! receivers of gifts are- you know- usually expected to stay quiet, and to be thankful. someone playing the game to his (or her) own rules?
yes there is a LINUX EMULATOR for WINDOWS!
however, it is not GPL freeware. the site makes a professional impression, and they really sell commercial products.
here you can see some life action of AMIGA OS 1.3 http://youtube.com/watch?v=eTitAxcPNQA (try to attach the video later)
The impact of LINUX on the commercial market is yet unknown. it is possible to assume that the game industry will not go opensource- because programming just makes 20 percent of a typical software title. it is not highly practical to publish an anatomy including all the graphics, studio artwork for BGM etc., to the internet for opensource.
so my point of view is that LINUX will not really make it into the games sector.
I could write how some of the known P2P programs work (they use LINUX technologies, at least), including how interaction with the system, and other users happens. however, i think that's difficult for an individual- normally commercially authors review such services professionally.

nike6, I think your story has potential but needs some improvement. I've got a few suggestions, and if you give them a try, I'd be happy to remove this flag.
I wasnt sure what was newsworthy in this story. News should always be about posting current stuff - new things you've discovered.

The headline is an Opinion, and isn't supported by resources linked to the commentary. Your commentary needs some work; including basic capitalization and grammar.
This actually sounds more like a rant on a discussion board somewhere than a story. One link is to a website that sells a product, which isn't exactly a news resource.

no i do not sell the product myself.
and the news is that LINUX is sort of dangerous- they will allow most people to use it, but not everyone to participate in the opensource projects.
only people with money can contribute significantly- or with the right connections. i do not say WINDOWS is open to everyone- just it happens differently.
OK i am going to change the headline. it is an opinion.
