Mobile phone use to be allowed on planes
The European Commission has introduced new rules to allow mobile phones to be used on planes.
The Commission says travellers will be able to receive and make calls and messages safely with their own mobile phones while flying all over Europe.
At the moment that luxury is limited to a few travellers, for fear of interfering with the aircraft's functioning. Some airlines, notably Air France, have begun tests on the system.
But the Telecoms Commissioner warned that if consumers received 'shock' phone bills, the service would not take off.
The Commissioner also called on airlines and operators to create conditions which would ensure that those using mobiles did not disturb other passengers.

But it has not been approved yet, has it? And I hope that it will not be approved, ever. It's kind of disturbing when people start to chat in airplane.

I could be wrong but I thought that I read somewhere (most likely the Sunday Times) that Ryanair were planning to introduce such a facility in the near future (the planes need to be modified) because the British and Irish authorities have agreed to allowing mobiles in the air.
Anyway, like you I am not at all pleased about allowing mobiles on planes it is bad enough having to listen to phone conversations while traveling by train or bus.
