NowPublic: Reuters 2.0?

Leonard Brody, founder of NowPublic, rejects the term "citizen journalism," which has often been applied to his business. "What [our contributors] do is not journalism. We don't call it that and never have." In spite of that, he did construct NowPublic to serve as a new kind of media site. His initial goal, he said, was, "Let's go build Reuters 2.0."

NowPublic is a site about current events, and it is powered by its users. Brody feels that, "Journalism is an art form. What we are is an army of eyes and ears." So Brody's army of contributors aren't known for creating original reporting in the way we usually think about it. "The fantasy of the 300 word post doesn't exist." Rather, his contributors perform two other functions.

good stuff:

mtippett, I like this story. It's good stuff. Ouch does that mean we have to put our original stuff elsewhere, what a pain!

I believe that should be Reuters 3.0. Just wait...

mtippett, I like this story. It's good stuff. Hence why I enjoy doing Opinion pieces on Stories, I find way to journalists take the person they are covering at their word, when upon further research by NP Contributors like myself and others find it a fallacy, or express an opinion on our experiences which also make the news.  Try doing that with any other mainstream media, Aint gonna happen,.Only on NP!

Thanks guys.  I have always drawn deep inspiration from The Donald and his words of council are an essential part of NowPublic's success.   So many profound thoughts with so little lip movement.  Remarkable.

Interesting story. The analytics bit sounds interesting -- are you building yourselves? Is search going to have a bigger role in this strategy? And as far as the hives are concerned are these going to be controlled by you, your users, both? You're already using tagging quite a bit is that going to play a role in creating an ontology for the site (and he hives?).

Facsinating plans. I like your comment, "I prefer to think of this army of reporters as customers, not competitors. The growth of crowd-sourced news content allows those people who've made it their career to study and communicate on news topics to do more study, and more communicating."

And, news "DJ" rather than citizen journalist is great by me!

Very exciting stuff!

mtippett, I like this story. It's good stuff. Everything has had an effect of 2.0 but not much in News business.I agree with Len that we need to create AP 2.0 or Reuters 2.0, Good story indeed, Cheers
