The Dishonesty of the Left, Part II

The Muslim religion urges violent conversions, which some of its followers dutifully try to carry out, and when even, so-called, peaceful Muslims gain political power, they try to impose Sharia on everyone.

Whenever someone points out the record of terror that Muslims are carrying out on a daily basis around the world, killing many thousands, one of the most stupid comments that is often made by liberals is that, “the Christian religion is just as bad”. If I ever had any respect for the viewpoint of a particular liberal, this kind of moral relevancy, equating the violence done by Christian fanatics several hundred years ago to the butchery of today’s Muslim fanatics, loses that respect immediately. If they do not try to equate historic periods like the Spanish Inquisition (during which about 3000 people were killed – about the same as on one day, 9/11) to today’s barbarism, they either go on to say, “we deserve it for colonialism”, or they really go off the deep end and try to equate President Bush’s attempts to protect America from this terrorism with the acts of the Muslim terrorists (President Bush is, of course, an avowed Christian).

When you throw in the anti-Semitism of some on the left, you get anti-Israel diatribes and expressions of support for the suicide bombers and missile launchers who are raining death daily down on innocent Israeli civilians. They (these liberals) don’t ever seem to get it. Israel has been a sovereign nation for 60 years; it has withstood four wars by Arab nations and countless acts of terrorism by Palestinians (who are detested by the other Arabs and kept in miserable camps for their own ends); Israel is never going to commit national suicide by giving up more of the land they gained while beating off the attempts to drive them into the sea; and they surely are not going to welcome these murderous Palestinian thugs into Israel proper.

So there you have it. The left supports a group of people who think nothing of mutilating and stoning women to death, who throw homosexuals off cliffs, who cut off heads, who punish petty thievery by cutting off hands and who think nothing of setting off bombs deliberately to kill children. Since many on the left are atheists, they justify this immoral stance by saying, “the Christians are the greater danger”. They justify going against all of the human rights’ tenets that liberalism is supposed to represent, and why? Because they hate Bush so much; because he won an election they expected to win; because he espouses Christian values and turns the other cheek when confronted with vitriol and death threats; because he took positive steps to defend America and used our military to defend and advance our interests instead of using the military to advance questionable social goals.

Perhaps during my lifetime, the term, political correctness, will change its meaning from “the only view on this that we liberals will tolerate” to “I used to be a liberal”.

I suppose "juvenile, unsubstantiated nonsense" can crop up all over the political spectrum. It's the kind of thing that might lead otherwise rational conservatives to side with Ann Coulter who thinks "we should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity."

Did you know that Catholics aren't allowed to vote in Israel? So much for democratic platitudes.

Why would you say such a thing?  Every Israeli citizen has the right to vote.  Arabs vote; Jews vote; Muslims vote; Buddhists vote; Protestants vote, and the 75,000 Catholics who live in Israel also have the right to vote.

This idea that Bush "turns the other cheek" really cracks me up. Yeah. Uh huh.  And he uses the American military to "advance our interests" (Oh yay! I hope he kills everyone as long as I can still drive my hummer and collect figurines by the Franklin Mint!) instead of using the military to "advance questionable social goals" (unspecified. The ones I really like are: manifest destiny, hypocricy, corruption, and being one of the only countries in the world that executes children - 13 year old mentally disabled American children on death row in Texas in case you are looking for the reference.) Sorry Joelle, I know it gets you where it hurts, this Franklin Mint thing.

"Actually, murderers must be at least 17 to make themselves eligible for the Huntsville needle - for now. This week, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments on whether capital punishment for crimes committed under the age of 18 violates the Constitution."

"Lionel Tate, the Florida teen who was sentenced to life in prison at 14 for brutally murdering a 6-year-old playmate when he was 12, will likely be going home this month. His mother, Kathleen Grossett-Tate, has agreed to a plea deal that would give him credit for the three years he's already served in a juvenile facility, impose a year of house arrest, 10 years' probation, and some mandatory counseling and community service in exchange for his plea to second-degree murder. The bargain is identical to an agreement the boy and his mother rejected before his 2001 trial—after which he was sentenced to life without parole. That sentence was reversed last month by a Florida appeals court, which held that the trial judge had erred in refusing to test Tate's mental competency to stand trial."

"The crime and conviction

Tate was left alone with Eunick, who was being babysat by Tate's mother, Kathleen Grossett-Tate, while she took a nap upstairs. Tate's defense argued that the then 12-year-old, 166 pound boy was playing with the 6-year-old, 46 pound girl, and had accidentally killed her while showing her professional wrestling moves he said he had seen on television.

Tate was convicted of killing Eunick by stomping on her so forcefully that her liver lacerated.[2] Her other injuries included a fractured skull, fractured rib and swollen brain. These injuries were characterized by the prosecution as "similar to those she would have sustained by falling from a three-story building."[3] In sentencing Tate to life imprisonment, Judge Joel T. Lazarus of Broward County Circuit Court said that "The acts of Lionel Tate were not the playful acts of a child [...] The acts of Lionel Tate were cold, callous and indescribably cruel."[4]

The sentence and the controversy

The sentence was controversial because Tate was 12 years old at the time and his victim was 6. He had been the youngest child in modern US history to be sentenced to life imprisonment, bringing broad criticism on the treatment of juvenile offenders in the justice system of the State of Florida.

Tate's mother, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper, had turned down a plea bargain arrangement which would have allowed Tate to serve a three-year term for second-degree murder and insisted on going to trial in hopes of an acquittal.

Original sentence overturned

After the conviction, the prosecution openly joined Tate's plea for leniency in sentencing, and even offered to help in his appeal. The trial judge criticized the prosecution for compromising the integrity of the adversarial system, and said that if the prosecution felt that life imprisonment were not warranted, they should not have overcharged him with murder in the first place.

In January 2004, a state appeals court overturned his conviction on the basis that his mental competency had not been evaluated before trial. This opened the way for Tate to accept the same plea deal he originally turned down, and he was released on one year's house arrest and 10 years' probation.

Probation violation

On September 3, 2004, Tate was detained and held in prison for violating the terms of his house arrest when he was found out of his house and carrying a four-inch knife. On October 29, the Associated Press reported that Tate was placed on zero tolerance probation, for an additional five years.

On November 30, Tate was allowed to return to the home of his mother, Kathleen Grossett-Tate. The family he had been staying with asked he be removed because frequent visits by state probation officers were too stressful.

Armed robbery arrest and subsequent plea bargain

On May 23, 2005, Tate was charged with armed burglary with battery, armed robbery and violation of probation, the Broward County, Florida, Sheriff's Office said.

Tate greeted Domino's Pizza deliveryman Walter Ernest Gallardo with a handgun outside a friend's apartment after phoning in an order. Gallardo dropped the four pizzas and fled the scene. Tate then re-entered the apartment, assaulting the occupant who did not want Tate inside.

Gallardo called 9-1-1 upon reaching the Domino's store and returned to identify Tate, the sheriff's office said in a statement. No gun was recovered.

On March 1, 2006, Tate accepted a plea bargain and was to be sentenced to 10-30 years imprisonment in a sentencing hearing in April 2006. Tate admitted that he had violated probation by possessing a gun during the May 23 robbery that netted four pizzas worth $33.60, but he has refused to answer questions about where he got and later disposed of the gun. He was allowed to withdraw his guilty plea for robbery, but was finally sentenced to 30 years in prison on May 18, 2006 on the gun possession charge."

Bush doesn't know how to turn the other cheek. Spare us of that vitriole. If Bush espoused true Christian values, he never would have engaged in a preemptive "unjust" war. He certainly didn't get the green light for his actions from the Vatican.
