UPDATE: Teen dies after Toronto school shooting

A 14-year-old boy has died after being shot at a school in Toronto's north end on Wednesday, police said.

The teenager was rushed to Sunnybrook Hospital in critical condition, but Toronto police confirmed just before 5 p.m. ET that he had died.

He died of a single gunshot wound, Chief Bill Blair told a news conference.
About 850 students attend the North York school. As news of the shooting spread, worried parents began arriving at the school, which has been cordoned off by police tape.

No weapons have been found, no arrests have been made and no information on the identity of the boy has been released. Chief Blair told reporters that the current focus is to get the students out of the school safely.

"I have officers on every floor and in every room, and ETF is now in the school as a precautionary measure" to safely remove each classroom from the school.

A 14-year-old boy has been shot at a high school in north Toronto, forcing a lockdown as police investigate the incident.

The young victim was reportedly hit once at 2:30 p.m. at C.W. Jefferys Collegiate Institute, at 340 Sentinel Rd., in the Finch Avenue and Keele Street area.

Peter Macintyre, a spokesman for Toronto EMS, confirmed a male was taken from C.W. Jeffries Collegiate Institute with a gunshot wound.

“We transported him with a gunshot wound with life threatening injuries and we took him to a trauma centre,” Mr. Macintyre said. “The police have asked us not to identify the hospital in circumstances like this.”

Media reports suggest the shooting occurred in the school's pool area, though police have yet to confirm anything. Ambulances were called to the school in the area of Finch Ave. West and Keele St. at 2:38 p.m., Toronto Police Constable George Schuurman said.

At this time, she
said, police don’t know if there is a shooter in the school or in the
vicinity. Police aren’t sure yet whether the shooting took place inside
the school or outside.

There was no word on whether the boy was a student at the school, which has 848 students from Grades 9 to 12.

Meanwhile, students are being told to stay away from the windows.

There is also an unconfirmed report that police are concerned the
shooter has possibly disguised himself and may be hiding among the
students.

The Toronto versions of shock radio are linking the shooting to gang violence, but the police have been very quiet on the subject and no direct evidence has been put forward. Lots still unknown.
