8 Killed in Philippine Bank Robbery

A bank in Manila was robbed Friday and eight people were killed during the incident.

MANILA — Eight people, most of them bank employees, have been fatally shot in a bank robbery in a town south of Manila, police said Friday.

Police Gen. Ricardo Padilla said the victims were found fatally shot when the bank opened at 9 a.m. He said two security guards were missing, leading authorities to suspect they were involved in the robbery.

Padilla said another security guard was among the dead. It was not clear how much money was stolen.

No other details were immediately available.

All of them were shot in the head, said Padilla.

One of the fatalities was identified as Bert Castro, the bank manager, said Padilla. The other bank employees were tellers.

Padilla said two security guards were missing, leading authorities to suspect that they were involved in the robbery.

Initial investigation showed that the robbers were able to cart away a still undetermined amount of money because the bank vault was open, he said.

"Definitely may nawawala [something is missing], bukas yung vault and ibang pera nakakalat pa [the vault is open and some cash are littered on the floor]," said Padilla.

Padilla said it was possible that the victims knew the robbers since they all had to be killed inside the bank.

He said the murders were discovered when RCBC clients alerted police on why the bank was not opened at the usual time of 9 a.m.

He said a task group had been created for the immediate capture of the suspects.

Meanwhile, an official of RCBC said on radio that they would wait for the results of the police investigation but assured families of the victims of assistance.
