ALEXANDER Downer will formally declare an end to his political career on Thursday.

The announcement will end more than seven months of speculation following the Howard Government's election loss and draw a line under one of the most successful political careers in modern times.

The former Opposition Leader has been the member for Mayo for almost 24 years – nearly 12 of them as Foreign Affairs minister.
