Henley by-election: Tories beat humiliated Labour into fifth place

Another trouncing for the Labour party in the UK, this time in the Henley by-election. The parliament seat election was to replace Boris Johnson, who resigned after he was elected mayor of London.

On the anniversary of Gordon Brown's arrival at No.10, Labour was pushed back from third place to behind the Green Party and the BNP in an ignominious defeat that saw the party lose its deposit with just 1,066 votes.

Despite a poor turnout, Conservative candidate John Howell helped his party increase its share of the vote by three per cent.

He took 19,796 votes compared to the Liberal Democrat candidate Stephen Kearney's 9,680.
