Lesbos islanders: We're Lesbians, Not Gay Women
Annoyed with misappropriation of their heritage, 3 residents of the Greek island of Lesbos are taking legal action against the Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece for using the word "lesbian" in its name.
Dmitris Lambrou, one of the plaintiffs, has stated that Lesbos islanders have referred to themselves as Lesbians for thousands of years while it has only been used to describe gay women in the last few decades. Although he doesn't have a problem with gay women, he insists they shouldn't call themselves lesbian since they aren't from Lesbos.
The Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece was targeted by the plaintiffs because it was the only officially registered gay group in Greece to use the word in its name.
The case will be heard in an Athens court on June 10.
