A cleaner and a mechanic have made a lucky escape when a 50 tonne crane collapsed on to a bus at a Sydney depot just before 8am this morning.

Two men were using the crane on an adjoining worksite to lift a concrete slab when the crane tipped over. Police said the crane smashed through the side of the bus and shattered a number of windows near the driver's seat the mechanic was repairing.

The other person, who was cleaning the vehicle at the time, jumped out of the way before the crane hit the bus.

"We are in the process of running our investigation and that's all we wish to say at this stage,'' said Linda Allen, the occupational health and safety manager for the company.

Workcover is investigating this incident.
