Maverick MP Field blasted for Gordon Brown attack
The knives are out! Field is the first Labour MP to publicly suggest that Gordon Brown should step down as prime minister before the next general election. With his polls at the lowest point Labour has ever seen, its hard to imagine how Brown's fortunes could get any worse.
Gordon Brown's closest allies labelled Labour rebels "assassins" yesterday after a fresh attack on the Prime Minister.
Furious cabinet ministers slammed the campaign against Gordon Brown and accused his opponents of trying to settle old scores.
In an extraordinary interview 10p tax rebel Frank Field said he would be "very surprised" if Mr Brown was still in charge at a 2010 General Election.
He claimed the PM was "unhappy inside his own body", "raged" and flew into "tempers of an indescribable nature."
In a direct call for Mr Brown to go, Mr Field said it was a "tragedy" and told him it was time to "talk to those he most loves" about his future.
But clearly exasperated colleagues of Mr Brown leapt to his defence. Asked if it was hard not to get the impression things were falling apart, Health Secretary Alan Johnson said: "Is it? God, another episode of true confessions.
