Myanmar: How many of us have to die for your diplomatic game?
By Ashin Mettacara
The United Nations has been diplomatically trying to persuade Burma leaders for a long time. They tried by sending envoys. They talked with beautiful diplomatic words, but people have already known in advance that they cannot realistically hope for anything before the UN envoys come. The UN could not do anything for Burma. They could not count even death after last September’s uprising. Since then we have deeply disappointed by the UN's failure.
The United Nation is likely very afraid of confrontation with China and Russia. Whenever both China and Russia say no, the United Nations was unable to change to say yes. They are always accepting and showing a kind of “obedience” to China and Russia. Were there any severe words or correcting comments made by UN leaders to Burma leaders? They have no authority to change Burma into a nation based on democracy. So the world is very dangerous under the leadership of cowards.
I wonder why most of the world seems content to be merely on-lookers for the Burmese people who are being persecuted. They have no weapons and not like others. They are relatively helpless now. They want to freely survive like you. Even Buddhist monks who stay away from killing are also longing for US, UK and France to enter the country by force. Why? Because they want to see the people with enough food to continue to survive.
You cannot diplomatically persuade Burmese military leaders to give up their kingships. Even the Buddha and the Gods will be unable to preach to them or to guide them. They regard themselves as the best players. They have already decided how to win tomorrow's match. Remember that you cannot win by playing with them without weapons, but only with the help of weapons. What is Ban Ki Moon's suggestion? Isn’t it clear that he is just playing a diplomatic game? If so, how many of us have to die for his diplomatic game?

mettacara, I like this story. It's good stuff.
It's true the UN is very limited in what it can do.
Interesting to see a Buddhist monk advocating military intervention. Thank you for sharing this story.

Mettacara, Thanks for getting the message out here at NP.
Really good stuff! Below is my comment and thoughts.
There are many of us who feel as you do in the US and around the world. Please know that it is the governments of the world and not the people who are creating death and destruction on the planet today.
And I am afraid there is no oil in Burma otherwise the US government would probably have invaded the government already.
It is really sad that the world has been divided by religion, money, politics and war. These things have only bread hatred, discrimination, death and dispare.
Don't allow them to polarize the average people, if we as the human race can come together as one for the common causes that threaten us all, the governments and hate-mongers will have to take notice.
I know it may be a bit cliche to some but to others it has tremendous meaning that not too long ago in this country African Americans were treated horrifically. But with one Man's dream and the collective effort of people uniting regardless of race, nationality or religion, things did change for the better.
And although this plague (racism, hate etc) is still around and we still have work to do, this one man's dreams, DR. MLK and so many others have come true in part. And no matter who's side people have been polarized to by the politicians, we have to be proud that an African American man is in the Presidential race.
Governments and religion and radicals throughout history have made this world something it was not meant to be I think. Yes it's another cliche but imagine if we all just stopped for a moment and started over as the human race.
Don't the governments realize that the money and power they all crave so much would be abundant if they stopped the wars. And if everyone had food and basic needs there would not be so much crime.
Yes I am a dreamer and I could go on about this but I too, just like you, am just so frustrated.
You know sometimes i even think that events like this and the way they are handled are done somewhat with fore thought by the world governments to ease population escalation. Call me crazy..
I am not sure what it will take to change the direction of the world. Many see no hope but I still see a glimmer of hope. I cannot know what it's like to be in your shoes but keep pressing on and spreading the word.
Many are talking about the "end of times" but we have to change those thoughts and change the world as it is so that we and our children can have a new begining.
I am sure some will disagree with me but remember, the more we are polarized and cannot come together, then the more we become the governments robots and will always have these problems in the world.

yes i agree with views of ifindtrends completely.
my friend first find an oil well in your country or a place of weapons of mass destruction then only United states will do something.
Otherwise you do not fall in their scheme of things.

Burma has both oil and natural gas which is what the Chinese are interested in.

Deliver aid from a warship? Like most Americans getting their gas and oil from the thousands of dead Iraqi's. You know I think Burma has a point. They are certainly more moral than China, and Russia, who have done absolutely nothing really in speaking out against the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan. In fact China helps the US fund its occupation. Why should any country think getting aid from invaders is somehow a good thing? I know if I was a victim of a tragedy and someone offered me aid, knowing that aid is loot from previous invasions and the spoils from the victims really, I would not want it. Better to suffer and work out of it than accept blood money.

The UN cut off aid the first day. They were playing politics because they wanted to control the aid and food. The countries and NGOs providing aid wanted to control it. They justify their jobs this way. It was also very dangerous. In China 150 volunteers died after the earthquake. The countries politics could have been changed after the aid was given out, but that wasn't good enough.
The rotting corpses have to be disposed of and that was left to the locals. The disease there can be stopped by burning the corpses.

War is not the answer... assassination perhaps but never war.
...the assassination market is a powerful idea.
Stay up.

It's a brave thing you are doing. Keep it up, but take care. I traveled to Myanmar and have seen for myself how brutal the government can be. In all of my travels some of the most beautiful and most terrible sights I have ever seen were in Myanmar.
When I see news, I always hope that it will be the beginning of change. But despite the bravery of the people, the world doesn't help. You are right, the world is afraid of China. China will never risk its relationship with Myanmar, they need the natural gas there. An invasion from the West could easily start a war with China, and no one would risk that. Now that China is more closely allied with Russia, the West's power in Asia is diminishing quickly. It's a terrible thing that the Burmese people are caught in the shadow of a neighbor who doesn't care anything for its people - only resources.

All permanent members of the security council have a veto. This isn't a kind of “obedience” to China and Russia, what's the way the UN was set up.
"They want to freely survive like you. Even Buddhist monks who stay away from killing are also longing for US, UK and France to enter the country by force."
If these countries entered Burma without the UN authority, China would defend the Burmese Junta and you would have a major war in Burma with many people being killed.
"You cannot diplomatically persuade Burmese military leaders to give up their kingships. Even the Buddha and the Gods will be unable to preach to them or to guide them."
If you are advocating violence, then you have given up your Buddhist vows. I have been a Buddhist for 40 years and under no circumstances can violence be made. Remember Gandhi.
I feel your pain and that of Burmese people but its wrong for a Buddhist monk to tell others to pick up weapons and kill others. You are in need of spiritual guidance?
Could you please tell us why you are living in Sri Lanka and not in Burma?
