A 6.9 magnitude earthquake rumbled through the Bicol region, southeast of Manila late Monday. There have been no reported injuries or damage as the 'quake was located 56km below the surface.
Philippine scientists put the preliminary magnitude at 6.5.
The quake was felt in Legazpi city in Albay province, site of the restive Mayon volcano, and southern Leyte province. There were unconfirmed reports of a power outage.
The quake hit at 10:11 p.m. (1411GMT) with an epicenter in the ocean 184 kilometers (114 miles) northeast of Catarman in Northern Samar province, at a depth of 56 kilometers (35 miles), said Ishmael Narag, head of the seismology section of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
Narag said said no tsunami warning was issued because of the depth of the quake.
A 6.9 magnitude earthquake shook Catanduanes island at 10:11 p.m. on Monday, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology put the preliminary magnitude at 6.5 and traced its epicenter off the central Philippine province of Northern Samar.
