NP Rank:
Zimbabwe Could Get Smacked Down With UN Sanctions
According to Jendayi Frazer, the United States’ top diplomat for Africa, nothing has changed in Zimbabwe so far. Recently, Frazer said that Robert Mugabe, the incumbent is trying to steal the election away. She also added that the opposition party known as the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) led by opposition candidate Morgan Tsvangirai won the presidency.
Tsvangirai was said that it was he who had won the election. So far, the results of the outcome of the elections have not been made public. Four weeks have already passed since then.
To keep Zimbabwe to go down the same path as Kenya went during the elections, Frazer had requested the leaders of Africa to speak out against post-election violence. She urged the rest of Africa to openly criticize Mugabe.
After the Kenya elections on December 27, 2007, the country was plunged into violence with thousands dead and many more displaced. The United Nations had called it the worst humanitarian disaster in Kenya.
But, there has been one confirmed death according to the US Embassy in Zimbabwe. There have been reports of many beaten and many others displaced. Zimbabwe could soon have a humanitarian crisis on its hand due to post-poll violence.
However, the MDC says fifteen of its supporters were killed. This indicates a possible foreshadowing on the dispute of the death toll. It would mirror that of the Chinese crackdown on pro-independence demonstrations that took place in Tibet during March before the start of the Olympic Torch relay.
Frazer also believes that Tsvangirai of the MDC won the elections fair and square. For that reason, she believes that Mugabe is trying to steal the elections and keep himself in power.
Independent monitors also back Frazer’s belief as they say that Tsvangirai got the most votes. However, they add that he does not have enough votes to override a run-off election. But, the MDC has gained control of Zimbabwe’s parliament.
However, Mugabe has remained defiant. He has given off the indication that he is not going to back down. Mugabe had already claimed that the Western nations were out to get him.
